Finance Options Available

23rd February 2022Industrial

Finance options availableWeddings, houses, holidays….and sheds, they all cost money! At Delphi Steel Buildings, we understand the financial implications of buying a building. It is a decision often taking months or even years to plan. Although we keep our prices as competitive as possible, there is no doubt that it is a costly venture. With this in mind we have worked hard and now have finance options available to help spread and manage the cost of your building when you buy from us.

Last year saw increases in the price of many raw materials. Some of our customers have simply chosen to hold off plans in the hope that prices will start to fall back a little. Others don’t have that choice, often because the building is integral to their business. We want to see our customers achieve their goals, so have looked at ways to help that happen.

By working alongside financial experts, we now have finance options available that help spread the cost of your project. Payment plans range over 5-15 years, and at competitive rates too.

Several of our customers have already taken advantage of this. By having the ability to spread the cost has, for some, made the difference between a go/no-go for their project. Others have had other projects on the go, and this has given them the ability to get more than one plan moving at once. We are delighted to be able to offer this so please feel free to ask for more information. Our experts are ready to talk and help find the best plan to suit your needs.

World Suicide Prevention Day

9th September 2021AgriculturalCommercialIndustrialSteel Industry

World Suicide Prevention Day

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, and serves as an opportunity for people from all areas of life to help raise awareness of this problem. Statistics show that men account for over 2 thirds of suicides in Britain, furthermore, suicide rates in construction workers are 3 times higher than the national average. According to the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, every working day 2 construction workers take their life.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, Delphi Steel Buildings are sharing some information hoping to help the spread of awareness and breaking down of stigmas around mental health.

Studies have helped to pinpoint the contributing factors and used to guide intervention and support. A construction site is a high pressure environment with long hours, job uncertainty, working away, and tight deadlines. On top of this studies have shown some workers experience financial pressures and unhealthy work cultures. Excessive alcohol consumption has also been identified as a factor.

Addressing these factors will help, however, another major player in this problem is stigma. Mental Health problems are still seen as something to be ashamed of, a sign of weakness rather than a health problem such as diabetes or heart disease. This often results in people not seeking help, or not knowing where to get help until it is too late.

In response to the problem, a number of charities have been set up to provide support to construction workers and training to help the industry tackle the problem. Below are two such charities, what they offer, and contact details:

Charities:

The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity

24/7 Construction Industry Helpline: 0345 605 1956 UK/ 1800 939 122 ROI.

Construction Industry Helpline App – a free self help app with information about how individuals can help themselves or take the next step in seeking professional help.

Construction Focused Wellbeing and Mental Health Training – a number of free training courses, from 1hr interactive sessions to accredited Mental Health First Aider courses.

Global Steel Supply

18th June 2021Industrial

Global Steel PricesThis year has seen dramatic fall in Global Steel Supply. At Delphi Steel Buildings, we have been working hard to absorb costs wherever we can and are hot on the heels in keeping our customers updated with what’s going on.

We can blame the supply crisis on a number of factors, the first being (of course) the Covid-19 pandemic. Steel is an essential product and therefore production lines have stayed open. However, the demand declined rapidly at the start of the pandemic when non-essential construction sites and various production lines had to close. Now that many of these have opened up again, demand has soared and inevitably outstripped supply. Now customers are paying more and waiting longer for materials they need.

Another culprit which has gained far less coverage has been the weather. A particularly cold winter disrupted scrap collection and delivery of ore and scrap in Europe and North America at the beginning of the year. At around the same time, shipments from Australia and China were also affected by bad weather. On top of this, China introduced emissions restrictions in key northern steel-producing provinces. All these factors have added to a tightening supply and a boost in raw material prices.

It is a very difficult time for both suppliers and customers. Many suppliers are quoting for goods on application making budget planning very difficult. However, the forecast is looking promising. As the factors mentioned above ease and steel production, imports, and exports regain momentum, global steel supply is expected to rise towards the end of the year. Skilled Trades Day 2021

5th May 2021AgriculturalCommercialIndustrialSteel Industry

Today is Skilled Trades Day 2021 and at Delphi Steel we feel it’s definitely worth a mention. Of course our customers rely on skilled trades for groundworks and construction but also all the work required along the way and once the buildings are up (electricians, joiners, roofers, plumbers, gas fitters, and more).

A skilled trades career certainly has its advantages: learning on the job (no tedious exams/essays/dissertations/etc), and no expensive and lengthy University degrees. Often a certificate is all that is needed to be able to begin work. For those who are less suited to office work and who wish to use their skills on a daily basis, a skilled trade is a great option. Skilled trades are paid well in the UK with an average salary of £30,000 per annum and job availability is very good. Perhaps a little too good in fact, the UK has been experiencing a major gap in skilled trade workers.

This has been attributed to a decline in the number of young people entering the construction industry. It is estimated that around 22% of skilled trades people are over 50, and 15% in their 60’s.

Skilled Trades Day 2021 aims to promote this career path and change attitudes towards this route that often leads to a long and succesful career.

Permitted Development Rights

21st April 2021AgriculturalCommercialIndustrialSteel Industry

Permitted Development RightsGood news in regard to Permitted Development Rights

Agriculture is a vital part of our rural communities, the economy and environment. In Scotland, farmers are supported in a number of ways to encourage their development and diversification. One such measure is Permitted Development Rights (PDR)

The PDR allows farmers to build or extend without the need for planning permission, an often lengthy and costly process. Instead, a ‘Prior Notification’ is submitted to the local planning authority before exercising Permitted Development Rights. The procedure determines if prior approval is required, if so, more information is requested to determine if approval should be given. This is a swift and less arduous route to being able to begin work. It cuts out the risk of rejection and delay and allows farmers to build quickly which in turn supports them to continue farming unhindered.

The good news for farmers is that the Scottish Government has now increased the maximum size allowed under this scheme from 465sqm to 1000sqm. This has been welcomed across the farming community as an acknowledgement of how the industry has evolved. The size and complexity of associated machinery has increased greatly in line with this adding to the necessity for larger buildings.

The new rules also allow agricultural and forestry buildings to be converted for residential and commercial use under the PDR. This applies to buildings constructed prior to 4th November 2019 and will provide a significant step towards supporting farm diversification.

There are a few exclusions which still apply and include: listed buildings or buildings situated within the curtilage of listed buildings, sites of archaeological interest, safety hazard areas or military explosive storage areas.

International Programmers Day

12th September 2020AgriculturalCommercialIndustrialSteel Industry

Today is International Programmers Day, a day to honour the work of programmers around the world and their contribution to society.

This is of interest to Delphi Steel Buildings because our Director, Rory MacLeod, is a computer programmer and lecturer. The bones of our business run on highly sophisticated programmes that Rory developed. These have brought our systems for design, order and delivery of Industrial Steel Buildings into a league of their own.

However, we all have reason to thank programmers because we simply would not be living in a modern world without them: no computers; no phones with instructions (software/application); primitive medical techniques and equipment that need manual operation; no calculators; manual navigation systems (would YOU get on that plane?!); no satellites; no e-Business and e-Marketing worldwide; no proper military defence system.

We really do have a lot to thank programmers for and with technology only becoming more and more advanced we will always need them. Coding has become part of the curriculum in around 15 European countries, and that is for primary age children – starting them young!

A number of benefits of learning programming young have been identified. This includes excellent career prospects with high salaries, gaining personal control over tech, and building problem solving skills, critical thinking and persistence.

With that in mind we just had to look into who are the youngest programmers in the UK. These guys are amazing, check this out!

Top 3 Youngest programmers in the UK

International Programmers Day was officially started in 2007. Today is the 256th day of the year (usually on the 13th of Sept but this is a leapyear) and was chosen because “256” (28) is the number of distinct values that can be represented with an 8-bit byte. 256 is also the highest power of 2 that is less than 365, the number of days in a year.

Delphi Roller-Shutter Doors

31st July 2020Industrial

Delphi Roller-Shutter Doors are an excellent option for securing your building and protecting its contents from the elements. They provide a neat and easy-to-operate access and security solution for almost all types of building. Far from being heavy and bulky, roller doors have a sleek finish while still maintaining strength and durability: a testament to their efficient design.

A range of qualities means roller doors are one of the most popular choices for a wide variety of purposes:

Security – Because our Roller Doors offer fast movement and quick function our customers are reassured that the contents of their buildings are secured quickly. Being made of steel makes for a seriously tough material that helps to prevent break-ins. All our doors come with secure locks that maximise the security when closed.

Quick operation – We can supply doors with motors that open the door rapidly. Our roller doors are designed to open quickly and are fitted with either 3-phase or single-phase motors making them ideal for fast-paced environments.

Temperature regulation – Installing insulated roller doors means internal temperatures are easily maintained. The ease and speed of operation means internal temperatures are not compromised for prolonged periods. This helps to significantly reduce energy consumption while still allowing ease of passage of people, machinery and material through the facility.

Fire resistance – Delphi Roller-Shutter Doors are all made from either hot dipped galvanised or plastisol coated steel. These are not only exceptionally durable but also have a high fire resistance (BSEN1634-1:2000), making them one of the safest solutions for areas that carry fire risk.

Delphi Steel Service – At Delphi Steel, our team designs, installs, and repairs all our roller doors so you can rest assured that all aspects of your purchase are taken care of.

Facemasks at Delphi

15th July 2020AgriculturalCommercialIndustrialSteel Industry

Facemasks at Delphi

In Scotland we are required to wear facemasks in shops. In response to this one of our staff has started a project making Facemasks at Delphi. Delphi Steel offices are based in Scotland, and easing of lockdown restrictions are well on the way. Although business certainly hasn’t resumed to pre-lockdown, things are somewhat quieter. Delphi Steels’ Sales Manager, Lili Mackenzie, has decided to use this extra time for something worthwhile.

She’s turned her hand to the sewing machine, a little less designing buildings and a little more designing facemasks! Luckily her talented daughter of the ripe old age of 10 is there to show mum how to use her sewing machine. I asked Lili why she is doing this.

‘Being a mum of two and working for Delphi Steel certainly keeps me busy! However I’m very aware of the efforts of essential workers and the sacrifices they are making every day to keep the country running. We wanted to put a little of our own effort directly towards the fight against Covid-19. We are all encouraged to wear facemasks. When we heard that this could lead to a shortage for the NHS, myself and my kids decided to do something that might help.

So far we’ve been trying out a few designs, we like this one the best. We have lots of different fabric designs and have four sizes so hoping that there is something for everyone. Price was discussed at great length and we decided we would ask for donations for the sake of making them affordable for everyone. All proceeds will go to the NHS.’
