International Programmers Day

12th September 2020AgriculturalCommercial buildingsIndustrialSports BuildingssteelWarehouses

Today is International Programmers Day, a day to honour the work of programmers around the world and their contribution to society.

This is of interest to Delphi Steel Buildings because our Director, Rory MacLeod, is a computer programmer and lecturer. The bones of our business run on highly sophisticated programmes that Rory developed. These have brought our systems for design, order and delivery of Industrial Steel Buildings into a league of their own.

However, we all have reason to thank programmers because we simply would not be living in a modern world without them: no computers; no phones with instructions (software/application); primitive medical techniques and equipment that need manual operation; no calculators; manual navigation systems (would YOU get on that plane?!); no satellites; no e-Business and e-Marketing worldwide; no proper military defence system.

We really do have a lot to thank programmers for and with technology only becoming more and more advanced we will always need them. Coding has become part of the curriculum in around 15 European countries, and that is for primary age children – starting them young!

A number of benefits of learning programming young have been identified. This includes excellent career prospects with high salaries, gaining personal control over tech, and building problem solving skills, critical thinking and persistence.

With that in mind we just had to look into who are the youngest programmers in the UK. These guys are amazing, check this out!

Top 3 Youngest programmers in the UK

International Programmers Day was officially started in 2007. Today is the 256th day of the year (usually on the 13th of Sept but this is a leapyear) and was chosen because “256” (28) is the number of distinct values that can be represented with an 8-bit byte. 256 is also the highest power of 2 that is less than 365, the number of days in a year.

Delphi Roller-Shutter Doors

31st July 2020Sports Buildings

Delphi Roller-Shutter Doors are an excellent option for securing your building and protecting its contents from the elements. They provide a neat and easy-to-operate access and security solution for almost all types of building. Far from being heavy and bulky, roller doors have a sleek finish while still maintaining strength and durability: a testament to their efficient design.

A range of qualities means roller doors are one of the most popular choices for a wide variety of purposes:

Security – Because our Roller Doors offer fast movement and quick function our customers are reassured that the contents of their buildings are secured quickly. Being made of steel makes for a seriously tough material that helps to prevent break-ins. All our doors come with secure locks that maximise the security when closed.

Quick operation – We can supply doors with motors that open the door rapidly. Our roller doors are designed to open quickly and are fitted with either 3-phase or single-phase motors making them ideal for fast-paced environments.

Temperature regulation – Installing insulated roller doors means internal temperatures are easily maintained. The ease and speed of operation means internal temperatures are not compromised for prolonged periods. This helps to significantly reduce energy consumption while still allowing ease of passage of people, machinery and material through the facility.

Fire resistance – Delphi Roller-Shutter Doors are all made from either hot dipped galvanised or plastisol coated steel. These are not only exceptionally durable but also have a high fire resistance (BSEN1634-1:2000), making them one of the safest solutions for areas that carry fire risk.

Delphi Steel Service – At Delphi Steel, our team designs, installs, and repairs all our roller doors so you can rest assured that all aspects of your purchase are taken care of.

Facemasks at Delphi

15th July 2020AgriculturalCommercial buildingsIndustrialSports BuildingssteelWarehouses

Facemasks at Delphi

In Scotland we are required to wear facemasks in shops. In response to this one of our staff has started a project making Facemasks at Delphi. Delphi Steel offices are based in Scotland, and easing of lockdown restrictions are well on the way. Although business certainly hasn’t resumed to pre-lockdown, things are somewhat quieter. Delphi Steels’ Sales Manager, Lili Mackenzie, has decided to use this extra time for something worthwhile.

She’s turned her hand to the sewing machine, a little less designing buildings and a little more designing facemasks! Luckily her talented daughter of the ripe old age of 10 is there to show mum how to use her sewing machine. I asked Lili why she is doing this.

‘Being a mum of two and working for Delphi Steel certainly keeps me busy! However I’m very aware of the efforts of essential workers and the sacrifices they are making every day to keep the country running. We wanted to put a little of our own effort directly towards the fight against Covid-19. We are all encouraged to wear facemasks. When we heard that this could lead to a shortage for the NHS, myself and my kids decided to do something that might help.

So far we’ve been trying out a few designs, we like this one the best. We have lots of different fabric designs and have four sizes so hoping that there is something for everyone. Price was discussed at great length and we decided we would ask for donations for the sake of making them affordable for everyone. All proceeds will go to the NHS.’

Happy Father’s Day

21st June 2020AgriculturalCommercial buildingsIndustrialsteelWarehouses

Happy Fathers Day!With over 88% of the workforce being male, Delphi Steel wanted to wish all the fathers involved in construction a very Happy Father’s Day! There are over 2 million construction workers in the UK working long hours, early mornings, late nights, and weekends. Heavy lifting, health and safety risks, deadlines, hot weather, cold weather, rain, wind, and snow means construction work is not for the faint-hearted.

Now that restrictions are being slowly lifted and construction work gets underway again, it’s back to work for many.  Given the nature of the work, many fathers in construction have to spend long periods away from their families. So from Delphi Steel to all the fathers in construction, we wish a very Happy Father’s Day.

A little Father’s Day history…

Unlike mothering Sunday, which is a traditional Christian holiday, father’s day began in 1908 following a mining accident that killed 362 men in West Virginia, USA.  The local church held a special sermon honouring the fathers that had been lost.

Following this, an American woman named Sonora Smart Dodd made it her mission to set up a national father’s day. She was raised along with her 5 siblings by her father following the death of her mother during childbirth.

The idea began to spread slowly across the USA but it wasn’t until World War 2 when advertisers saw the opportunity of using Father’s Day to promote the troops out on the field. By the end of the war, father’s day was a national institution.

Finally in 1972, Richard Nixon declared Father’s Day a national holiday.  Of course by this time it had already spread to the UK and is a day we all know well.

Construction Projects during Covid-19

11th May 2020AgriculturalCommercial buildingsIndustrialSports BuildingssteelWarehouses

Construction Projects During Covid-19The message from Boris Johnson to ‘Stay Alert’ caused quite a stir. Immediately Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales said they are not following suit and sticking to their ‘Stay At Home’ message. For the construction industry this causes problems for suppliers and contractors who have customers outside their own UK country. Unlike the rest of the UK, England has allowed ‘non-essential’ sites to re-open while others only allowing this for essential work (i.e. sites involved in projects that support the fight against Covid-19). More information here. Considering this, we want to reassure Delphi Steel customers what it is we can do for you now.

All our suppliers are operating, and we can deliver goods to site.  Most have personnel working from home with a skeleton staff on site to adhere to social distancing guidelines. As a result, the delivery and lead times are a day or two longer than normal.

Although no one can say anything is ‘business as usual’, construction projects during covid-19 are not at a complete standstill. We are still able to supply your building kit. Finding contractors will be more difficult depending on your location. Some of our customers have sufficient storage for materials ready for availability of contractors.  Others are able to begin construction themselves.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had wide rippling effects on businesses as well as personal lives. With so many businesses forced to close, there are many left with high rental overheads and nowhere to move stock. We are delivering buildings to customers who will save more by building their own storage than continue to pay rental for business premises.  For others we are busy working on their designs while they work with planning to acheive the permissions required.

However, if you are at the very beginning of your project we are happy to help set the wheels in motion with design and costing. Our in-house design software allows us to design your building, generate a quote and make adjustments quickly and easily. Call or email and we will be happy to discuss how to get your construction projects moving during covid-19.

The New Covid-19 Field Hospitals

3rd May 2020Commercial buildingsIndustrialSports BuildingssteelWarehouses

During these"The unprecedented times we are all very much aware and appreciate the efforts keyworkers are making every day. In honour of this Delphi Steel is highlighting the efforts of construction workers and armed forces personnel. These key workers have worked tirelessly on building the new Covid-19 field hospitals to help tackle the virus.

Of course the main concern is a rapid spread of Covid-19 resulting in large numbers of patients requiring care. Additionally, the virus has already caused interruption to services for patients with other health conditions. This has driven the need to build new hospitals which have now been opened up and down the country. The anticipated effect is an easing of pressure on the NHS, restoration of care services and treatment of coronavirus patients. So far 8 new hospitals have been opened by converting stadiums, concert halls and convention centres. The result of this gargantuan effort has freed up to 33,000 beds around the country, equivalent to 50 new hospitals (BBC.co.uk).

The new Covid-19 field hospitals:

Stop Food Waste Day and STEEL

29th April 2020Commercial buildingsIndustrialSports BuildingssteelWarehouses

Today is ‘Stop Food Waste DaStop Food Waste Dayy’. Delphi Steel found an interesting article advocating the use of steel in food packaging.  The Covid-19 outbreak has led to an increase in the food waste problem. This was partly due to panic buying and partly the effect of pubs, cafés, restaurants, etc having to close.  Many of these businesses provided home deliveries to use up left-overs, and panic buying seems to have stopped. As a result Supermarkets have restocked and there appears to be plenty for everyone again.

Great news but sadly the food waste problem remains.  WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) produced a progress report in 2019 claiming around a third of food is wasted globally (link to the article here). So let’s put that into perspective, in the UK that amounts to 10 million tonnes of food. Value: £20 billion, GHG emissions: 25 million tonnes. A problem? Most definitely!

Benefits of Steel Packaging

In honour of Stop Food Waste Day, here is a list of some benefits steel packaging has that reduces food waste:

·       Minimised loss at processing stage

o   harvest-transport-canning time is usually less than 3 hours

·       Preservation of food

o   provides 100% protection from air, water, and light damage resulting in a shelf-life of up to 5 years

o   maintains taste and nutritional value

·       Robust packaging –

o   steel is tough so requires little extra packaging.

o   reduces damage or spoiling and loss during transport

·       Low energy transport – requires no freezing

·       Undesirable food (misshapen or “ugly”) is not thrown away but canned and processed as normal.

·       Canned foods are a good portion-size so consumers can buy what they need and reduce wastage at home

Furthermore, steel is 100% recylcable. There are over 1500 scrapyards in the Uk all helping to keep the steel recylcing rate at a fantastic 76%. Check out this video from Apeal.org for more information about steel recycling.

The Steel Industrys’ Covid-19 Recovery

26th April 2020Commercial buildingsIndustrialSports BuildingssteelWarehouses

The Steel Industrys' Covid-19 RecoveryThe Covid-19 pandemic has affected all areas of our modern lives. The Steel Industry is no exception and like all other companies involved in the industry, Delphi Steel has also felt the impact. Building sites across the country are scattered with abandoned forklifts and diggers, and foundations exposed of projects left for another day. As a result, dreams of the new house, storage facility, leisure centre and start-up units are now a far-off reality. Here we take a look at what the Steel Industrys’ Covid-19 recovery might look like.

The construction industry accounts for 7% of GDP, generating over £110 billion per annum to the economy and 3 million jobs. This amounts to 10% of total UK employment. Naturally there is concern of the impact of long-term closures of sites.

Yesterday debate began over easing lockdown strategies here in Britain. This is a welcome discussion and gives hope of light at the end of this tunnel. But let us be realistic, we know this is not a flick of a switch. Normality will be a far cry from the day we start going back to work.

Moving Forward

Planning the strategies needed to limit the spread of the virus while still allowing projects to move forward is essential.  We have been on lockdown for over a month with no definite answer to when that will end. A premature return to work could have disastrous effects.  Poorly planned and/or too soon then we will render all our sacrifices a waste of time and will go back into full lockdown restrictions.

One of the UK government’s objectives is getting the construction industry back to work.  In light of this some companies are beginning to plan a re-opening of sites. One such company is Persimmon.  They have announced they are re-opening sites as of the 27th April. They have been formulating and testing new site protocols they say will allow them to return to site safely. Monitoring the success of companies re-starting work can provide lessons ensuirng the Steel Industrys’ Covid-19 recovery is successful.
