Large Steel Buildings – how BIG will yours be?

Large Steel Buildings at Delphi Steel

Think your plans are too big for cold rolled steel? Think again! Here at Delphi Steel we can supply cold rolled steel frames that are big enough and tough enough to take on large to extremely large steel buildings. Cold rolled steel is fast becoming first choice because it’s cheaper to buy and cheaper to build.

We now supply steel sections up to a whopping C500, 6mm thick. All our steel is manufactured by cold roll forming of pre-hot dipped galvanized strip to BS EN 10346 with minimum tensile strength of 450 N/mm2 and Z275 coating. Below is an example of the sort of size this steel can comfortably accommodate.

At 27m wide and 108m long, this is truly a massive building. In this example the build is utilised as start-up units. Start-up units are one of our most regular request. Large buildings are separated into a number of smaller units which are then rented out to new or expanding businesses.

Other uses for large buildings like this can include storage, oilfield habitats, aircraft hangars, factories, and commercial units.

So whatever your plans, get in touch to find out how Delphi Steel can help you get started on your project:

Why cold rolled steel is best

3rd August 2019Commercial buildingsIndustrialsteel

Cold rolled steel is more economical than hot rolled steel when used as a portal frame design, due to the amount of steel used.

The cold rolled steel is produced with a galvanised finish to protect it from rust. You won’t need to apply any further treatments.

The cold rolled sections within the building have a warranty of up to 25 years, but will last for up to 30+ years.

Cold rolled steel is also lightweight, as the components are assembled together onsite. This means there are cost savings in the manufacturing process, transportation costs, and installation on site.

Due to the structure being lighter than traditional hot rolled steel buildings; costs are usually saved on the groundworks element of the contract.

On a traditional hot rolled buildings it may be necessary to pile the foundations leading to expensive groundwork cost. When using a cold rolled steel building a raft foundation could be designed thus saving our clients thousands of pounds.

Cold rolled buildings are ideal for workshops, storage buildings, industrial units, car show rooms where the structure is not asked to perform any other function.

Cold-Formed Steel Shakes Up Construction

12th July 2019Commercial buildingsIndustrialsteel

Steel is one of the most widely used and recycled materials. There are thousands of grades of steel with equally as many applications. There are also different technologies for manufacturing steel, one of which offers a major advantage in the construction industry: cold-formed steel (CFS).

Hot-rolled steel and cold-formed steel are both structural steels used in building construction. Hot rolled steel is made by rolling steel into thin strips or plates. Hot rolling occurs at very high temperatures, above the recrystallization temperature of the material, producing malleable steel that can be formed in a variety of shapes.

Cold-formed steel, also called light gauge steel is made from steel plate, sheet or strip material. Cold-formed steel can be made by roll forming, the method used for mass production, by stamping, commonly used in the automotive industry, or by press braking. Cold rolling is a metal forming process in which a sheet of metal is pressed through a pair of rolls to reduce thickness, increase strength and improve surface finish. The cold rolling process happens at ambient temperature, below the steel’s recrystallization temperature. This process changes the mechanical properties of the steel to produce uniform, lightweight steel with a high strength-to-weight ratio. Cold-formed steel is also easy to fabricate, transport, and install; it is moisture-, fire-, wear- and corrosion-resistant; and it is energy efficient. Read the American Iron and Steel Institute’s Cold-Formed Steel Profile for an in-depth look at the reasons why cold-formed steel is becoming the material of choice in construction.

SSDA highlights steelwork’s appeal

6th July 2019Commercial buildingsIndustrialsteel

The shortlist for the 51st Structural Steel Design Awards (SSDA), jointly sponsored by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) and Trimble Solutions (UK) Ltd, has been announced.

The Awards have again seen a strong number of submissions and the 20 shortlisted projects all showcase steel’s flexibility and versatility in a number of varying applications, spread across the entire UK. (See here for a full pictorial list.)

The winners will be announced at an evening reception in London on 1 October.

Commenting on the shortlist, BCSA Director General Sarah McCann-Bartlett said: “The structural steelwork sector has evolved significantly since the SSDAs were launched in 1969, however one constant has been the ability of steel to deliver the most efficient and cost-effective solution for a building or structure, while also providing practical, flexible and beautiful spaces. As the original offsite framing material, structural steel is now looking to the future to deliver a more complex level of design for manufacture and assembly.”

Trimble Solutions (UK) Ltd Managing Director Richard Fletcher added: “The projects shortlisted once again celebrate our world class structural steel industry within the UK and Ireland. At the forefront of technology within construction, our industry continues to deliver projects of high complexity and scale through data driven design, manufacture, assembly and erection.”

The SSDA 2019 shortlist is:
160 Old Street, London
Aga Khan Centre, London
Battersea Arts Centre
Chiswick Park Footbridge
Coal Drops Yard, London
